Green streets

We want a capital with green streets, which are pleasant, safe and attractive for people to use

CPRE London advocates for ‘compact, efficient cities’ with strong Green Belt protections, which are low-carbon. Our capital should have green streets, where people get around by public transport, walking and cycling and can live close to jobs and amenities. Parks and green spaces should be protected for health, recreation, sport and nature. And we should be doing our bit to mitigate the effects of climate change.

We want to create compact cities by using land efficiently, recycling sites in need of regeneration, using space better and moving away from car use, which is space-inefficient and has other unwelcome impacts, including air pollution and noise.

We have five priorities in this area:

Parking

The growing space taken up by cars and parking is a major factor in turning London’s streets from green to grey. And we want to reverse this, by encouraging boroughs to look at their parking policy

Healthy Streets Scorecard

As part of the Healthy Streets coalition of health, environment and transport campaigners, we publish an annual scorecard marking boroughs on measures to reduce car use and promote sustainable travel

Growing swathes of grey space contribute to flooding, sewage and traffic pollution run-off into rivers and the heating effects of climate change. So we are calling for London to become a sponge city

Not all streets are needed for parking or as through-routes for cars, So we want each of London’s 33 boroughs to transform 30 streets into parks and play spaces
