Join the Clean Air Wins campaign
A campaign launched today (26 April) aims to combat air pollution across London, helping to protect the capital’s most vulnerable communities.
The Clean Air Wins campaign, supported by CPRE London and many other groups, is fighting to make sure everyone in the capital can breathe clean, safe air.
Londoners daily experience poor air quality, frequently breaching World Health Organization guidelines. The outcome is lifelong illnesses and thousands of early deaths every year.
Older people, children, people of colour, and people living in poverty are hit the hardest.
Air pollution is associated with many health problems, including respiratory diseases like emphysema and bronchitis, asthma, strokes, lung cancer and heart disease.
Traffic emissions
One of the leading causes of harmful pollution is emissions from road traffic – especially from dirty diesel vehicles. The pollution from vehicles is not only harming our health, but also harming the planet. Road traffic accounts for a significant amount of London’s greenhouse gas emissions.
Research has shown that cleaner air could boost the UK economy by £1.6 billion per year. Improving air quality in London would provide an economic benefit of almost £500 million per year to the local economy as a result of a healthier workforce.
Clean Air Wins is supported by C40 Cities and the UK Healthy Air Coalition, a collective of leading health, environment and transport organisations with the shared vision of a UK free from toxic air.
How you can help
Clean Air Wins will be training volunteers to:
- Spread awareness about poor air quality and its impact on public health
- Participate in campaign events and activities
- Advocate for policies that support clean air like the expansion of Ultra Low Emission Zone
